The most extensive archive of Oregon documents among the Bancroft collections, especially concerned with the Oregon Indian wars, 1853-1856, but including printed material on politics and government, 1863-1864. The volume P-A 139 contains an autobiography.

Dowell moved to Portland, Oregon in 1850, and then to Jackson in 1852, finally moving back to Portland in 1855. He took part in the Rogue River Indian War in 1853 and the Yakima War in 1855. He operated a pack train from Wilamette Valley to the gold mines and bought and edited the Oregon Sentinel.
